By 1953, Chevrolet restructured its naming system with the Bel Air designation now being reserved for the premium model within any given series of sedan. While this design concept had been unsuccessfully tried in the 1920s, it appeared to strike a chord with postwar American buyers resulting in the sale of 76,662 that very first year. Named the Bel Air hardtop, this new offering visually looked like a convertible with its roof up, but in fact featured a non-detachable, solid roof. In 1950, General Motors designers created a new, highly attractive, two-door sedan.
